La Perla de Cadiz

Picture of La Perla
The English translation of the Spanish word "Perla", is "Pearl". Antonia Gilibert Vargas, born in Cadiz, Spain in 1925 was indeed the beloved Pearl of Cadiz and her pure voice lifted in songs of cante will never be forgotten. The following commentary from noted author Mario Bois provides us with some additional insight into her life.

"Her name was Antonia Gilibert Vargas. She was born in Cadiz in 1925 and died there in 1975. She was the daughter of the cantaora, La Papera and the wife of the cantaor and dancer, Curro de la Gamba. In the realm of pure cante her career was quite simple ; she went from festivals in tablaos, from Cadiz to Madrid, from Madrid to Seville, with a few tours in France, Germany and England. She was awarded a number of important prizes (the "Alegrias y Bulerias" Prize in the Cordoba Competition, the "Bulerias" Prize in the International Competition in Jerez in 1962, etc.). At her death numerous tributes were paid her by the greatest figures in the cante of our time. Antonia, a jovial woman, bursting with health, carried off at fifty ! Antonia, who sang with carefree clarity the cantes that sprang from the earth, from her beloved province of Cadiz, she who sang of the joys of life so well, and when the terrible disease took hold of her body, her voice changed and from her afflicted heart songs still came, but now they were more serious, deeper, more secretive, expressed in a deeper voice. And it was as if a dark veil had been cast over this light that had been too bright."
